Queen Camilla Delivers Powerful Message on Literacy During Ratho Library Visit

Queen Camilla underscored the vital importance of libraries and reading during her latest royal engagement, as she officially opened the newly rebuilt Ratho Library in Newbridge, Edinburgh, on Tuesday.

Speaking passionately about her long-standing support for literacy, the Queen Consort used the moment to advocate for the revival of community libraries across the UK — many of which have faced closure in recent years.

“I wish a lot of other people would follow your example and open more libraries all over the country,” Camilla said.

“Sadly, a lot of them have been closing down. So to see something as wonderful as this being reopened is all to the credit of all of you who've made it happen.”

A lifelong advocate for literacy, Queen Camilla is patron of several organizations that promote reading among all age groups, and she used this visit to reinforce how libraries serve as vital community hubs.

During the event, Queen Camilla met The Girl on the Train author Paula Hawkins, and revealed a personal reading preference.

“I’m very partial to crime novels,” she told the bestselling writer.

Camilla went on to praise the role libraries play in fostering a love for books:

“They manage to inspire a love of reading of books, from toddlers to pensioners.”

Her solo engagement forms part of Holyrood Week, the royal family's annual celebration of Scottish communities, in which Queen Camilla has taken an active role alongside King Charles.

The Queen’s remarks struck a chord with many, serving as a reminder of the enduring value of local libraries in an increasingly digital world — and her commitment to keeping the joy of reading alive for future generations.
