Prince Harry has reportedly approached the UK Home Secretary with a renewed request to restore his official security arrangements — a move that could make it easier for his children, Archie and Lilibet, to visit Britain.
According to GB News, the Duke of Sussex has written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, formally asking for the reinstatement of his taxpayer-funded protection. The appeal comes after a previous request to the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), the body responsible for security decisions involving high-profile figures under the Home Office.
Royal expert Jennie Bond told GB News that Harry “has a point” when it comes to his safety concerns, noting his position as King Charles III’s son and a former army officer.
“I’m not suggesting he should have taxpayer-funded security while living in the United States,” Bond explained. “But when he’s in the UK, it doesn’t seem unreasonable for him to have Metropolitan Police protection.”
Bond added that improving Harry’s security situation could open the door for more family visits in the future.
“If his security arrangements were upgraded, it could clear the way for him to bring his children — and perhaps even Meghan — to visit the royal family back home,” she said.
However, Bond advised the Duke to avoid involving the King directly in the dispute, warning that doing so “would place Charles in a very difficult position.”
A spokesperson for the Home Office confirmed that Harry’s request has been received but declined to offer further details, citing confidentiality around personal security matters.
“The UK Government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate,” the spokesman said.
Harry’s security has been a point of contention since he stepped down as a working royal in 2020, with ongoing debates about the level of protection he should receive while visiting the UK.
